On the day before my 30th birthday, I walked across the border into Mexico with two carry-on bags and a heart full of excitement and anxiety: I was about to board on a one-way flight to Mexico City and start over from scratch. This was the result of the years spent traveling abroad to different countries around the world, only to come back home and feel out-of-place. It took me longer than I'd like to realize that the cultures, societal norms, and places within the borders of our birth country aren't suitable for everyone, and I was about to change that.
Now, I'm proud to say that I'm an American expat, Mexican resident, and full-time digital nomad, and have been for over a year and counting. While I'm still exploring my new home, it's been realized that this change was beneficial for my mental health and personal satisfaction: I no longer feel out-of-place. However, I've also recognized that there are also challenges that are unique to being an expat, a digital nomad, or both.
Regardless of where you are on your journey to becoming an expat, full-time digital nomad, or both like myself, I hope this platform sheds some light on some of the experiences that you may encounter. Given that I'm just getting started with The Nomadic Expat, please reach out to me if you have questions or comments about this journey!
